Latest dispatch of inner world voyaging from Marseille-by-way-of-Alabama’s most famous shahi baaja player, Turner Williams Jr. Not the busiest of lanes granted, but Ensoleillée would no doubt make its presence known anywhere. The shahi baaja, in case you didn’t know, is an adapted zither-styled stringed instrument of Indian origin, and Williams Jr deploys in such a way to find some unique space between blues-derived American primitivism and eastern ragas. The long form pieces will inevitably get the most attention, and it’s kinda hard to ignore the Gottsching-spiritualism of the mammoth ‘Pris sur la coursive vent frais’ and the manipulated Celtic folk of ‘Tournesol’, but for some reason it was the shortened excerpts of Williams Jr’s playing that i kept coming back, tantalising avant-blues epigrams suggestive of something greater and unknown just beyond. Given the relative obscurity of the instrument, comparisons with Jon Collin’s work with the nyckelharpa on Bridge Variations seem fair, though you can connect lines back through contemporaries such as Vibracathedral Orchestra and Ben Chasny to any number of the founding greats (Fahey, Basho et al). A spellbinding and eternal discipline is being channeled here and Turner Williams Jr directs it just right.
